About the Fast
In honor of Black August, we’re hosting a 3-day water fast — a time of reflection, discipline, and solidarity. Fasting during Black August is a tradition rooted in honoring freedom fighters, practicing self-determination, and deepening community bonds through intentional healing.
Why a Water Fast?
We’ve chosen a water fast because it is one of the most powerful ways to reset, reflect, and discipline the body and spirit. Water fasting has been practiced for centuries as a method of cleansing, sharpening focus, and deepening spiritual awareness. While it is a demanding form of fasting, the simplicity of water alone helps strip away distractions and center us in the meaning of Black August.
Tips for First-Time Fasters
If this is your first time water fasting, here are a few gentle suggestions to help prepare:
Eat clean in the days leading up: Gradually reduce processed foods, caffeine, and heavy meals so your body transitions more smoothly.
Stay hydrated before and during: Begin drinking more water in the days before, and during the fast aim to sip regularly throughout the day.
Rest and meditate: Energy levels may shift, so allow yourself to rest. Use meditation, journaling, or prayer to deepen reflection.
Listen to your body
Water fasting can cause detox symptoms as the body releases stored toxins — sometimes this looks like headaches, light-headedness, fatigue, or mood shifts. These experiences are often part of the cleansing process. If you are able, we encourage you to continue, but always prioritize your health and safety.
If you feel unwell, it’s okay to pause or break your fast.
